History: Fayoum has been inhabited since ancient times and was known as Shedet in ancient Egyptian times. It was later called Crocodilopolis during the Ptolemaic period due to the worship of the crocodile god Sobek. The region flourished under Greek and Roman rule, and it was an important agricultural area during these periods.
